Open Banking Without the Build: A Faster Way for Enterprises to Modernise Payments
11 Aug 2026
Payment infrastructure should work the way your business already works, not the other way around.
Launching new payment capability usually comes down to two imperfect options. Build it yourself, and you tie up development resources and push out the rest of your roadmap. Stitch together a different provider for every payment method, and you end up with a fragmented stack that only gets harder to manage.
There is a third path!
Qippay Horizon brings open banking, recurring payments, cards, payment orchestration, consented account data and merchant tools together in one integrated enterprise suite.
It's a faster way to launch modern payment capability, without building the underlying infrastructure yourself.
The enterprise payment dilemma
Most enterprises know their payment experience needs work.
Customers want more choice, faster confirmation and simpler ways to pay, whether it's a one-off purchase or a repeat payment. Finance wants better visibility and easier reconciliation. Technology teams want infrastructure that's secure and scalable without signing up for another long internal build.
The usual options each come with real trade-offs.
Building payment infrastructure internally
Building in-house gives you control, but it can take a year or more to design, build, test and launch.
It also demands specialist knowledge, ongoing maintenance and coordination with banks, payment providers and other third parties, and your engineering team ends up spending months on payment plumbing instead of the products that actually differentiate your business.
Budget is committed long before the first payment is processed.
Adding separate providers for every payment flow
Piecing together existing tools can look faster on paper, but it tends to create a different problem.
You may end up with:
One provider for card payments
Another for direct bank payments
A separate platform for recurring payments
Another integration for account data
Different reporting and reconciliation processes
Multiple operational and commercial relationships to manage
Each provider solves its own piece of the puzzle, but the wider payment environment gets more fragmented with every addition.
Come month-end, finance teams are often still exporting files, chasing references and reconciling payments across several disconnected systems by hand.
One integration for open banking and payments
Qippay Horizon provides a complete enterprise payment capability through one integrated suite.
It combines:
Direct bank payments for one-off purchases and checkout flows
Recurring bank payments for regular collections
Bank-on-file experiences for faster repeat purchases
Card payments for customers who continue to prefer them
Payment orchestration across multiple payment methods
Consented account data for verification and checks
Merchant onboarding and management
Reporting and reconciliation tools
Qippay APIs and sandbox access
Hosted and embedded payment experiences
Enterprise integration, testing and go-live support
Instead of maintaining a separate integration for every payment type, your organisation manages its payment capability through one connected environment.
What is open banking?
Open banking lets customers securely authorise payments, or share selected account information, directly through their own bank.
For payments, that means a customer approves a direct account-to-account transfer inside their own banking experience. Funds are confirmed in real time at initiation, and settlement follows within the hour.
For data services, the customer consents to sharing specific account information for an agreed purpose, supporting things like account verification, onboarding, affordability checks, balance checks and fraud reduction.
Qippay uses bank-approved connectivity and does not rely on screen scraping.
Open banking isn't simply another payment button. Combined with cards, recurring payments, merchant tools and orchestration, it becomes part of a much broader enterprise payment strategy.
Route every payment through one place
Not every customer wants to pay in the same way.
Some prefer paying directly from their bank account. Others reach for a card. Returning customers often value a simple bank-on-file experience, while regular customers may need an authorised recurring payment arrangement.
Payment orchestration allows these methods to be managed together.
Your customer picks whatever method suits them. Your organisation keeps visibility across the full payment flow through one integrated environment.
The result: fewer separate systems to maintain, and a more consistent experience for customers, operations and finance alike.
Horizon isn't designed to push cards out of the picture. They remain part of the suite, giving customers choice, while giving your organisation more control over how different payment methods are presented and managed.
Modern recurring and scheduled payments
Traditional direct debit remains widely used, but it can create real challenges for businesses and their customers.
A failed payment can go unnoticed for days. Collection dates don't always line up with a customer's pay cycle. And the business is often left waiting to find out whether a payment actually went through.
Open banking can support more flexible recurring and scheduled payments.
Customers authorise an ongoing payment arrangement directly from their bank account. Depending on the agreed model, the business may be able to vary the amount or schedule while remaining within the customer's original consent.
This can support use cases such as:
Monthly subscriptions
Insurance premiums
Utility and telecommunications bills
Regular investment contributions
Instalment plans
Membership fees
Repeat purchases
Faster confirmation gives businesses an earlier opportunity to respond when a payment doesn't succeed.
It can also help align scheduled payments more closely with a customer's actual circumstances, rather than relying on a rigid collection date that only increases the likelihood of failure.
Deploy Qippay Horizon your way
Every enterprise has different commercial, technical and brand requirements. Qippay
Horizon can be deployed through several models:
Qippay-branded
Co-branded
Embedded within your existing systems
Fully white-labelled
A fully white-labelled deployment lets your organisation offer modern payment and open banking capability entirely within its own customer experience.
Your brand remains visible throughout the journey, while Qippay provides the underlying technology, connectivity, APIs, merchant tools and integration support.
You keep control of the customer relationship, without having to build every component internally.
Open banking in practice
The same Horizon suite can be adapted to how different industries manage payments, customers and financial information.
Travel
Travel businesses often operate on tight margins, particularly for high-value bookings.
Card fees climb with the size of the purchase, and chargebacks can surface long after the trip is over. High-value transactions can also be declined because of card limits or fraud controls, even when the customer has the funds available.
A direct bank payment allows the customer to approve the transaction through their own bank. Funds are confirmed at initiation and settle within the hour.
Returning customers can also use a bank-on-file experience for simpler repeat bookings, while cards remain available for customers who prefer them.
Webjet currently uses Qippay as its preferred payment method.
Wealth management and investment funds
Many regular investment contributions rely on direct debit.
When a payment fails, the provider often doesn't find out straight away. The investor stays out of the market, and repeated failures can eventually cause the customer relationship to lapse.
Lump-sum investments bring a different challenge: a customer makes a manual bank transfer with an incorrect or incomplete reference, and the finance team is left identifying and allocating the funds.
Horizon can support account verification during onboarding, properly referenced direct bank payments, recurring contributions and easier future top-ups.
Successful payments can clear within the hour, while failed payments can be identified the same day, giving the provider a chance to reach the investor before a missed payment becomes a lost customer.
Insurance
Insurance premiums are often collected by direct debit.
When a payment fails, there can be a delay before either side finds out. The customer assumes their policy is still current, while the insurer is left carrying the risk of an unpaid premium.
Account verification during policy setup can help confirm that the payment account belongs to the customer.
Recurring payments can then be collected directly from the bank account, with faster visibility of whether the payment succeeded. Collection dates can also be aligned more closely with the customer's pay cycle, helping reduce avoidable failures.
Customers paying an annual premium may be able to complete a direct bank payment without a percentage-based card fee.
Utilities and telecommunications
Utilities and telecommunications providers process a high volume of relatively small recurring payments.
Cards expire, get replaced, or decline without warning. Direct debit dates don't always match a customer's income cycle. And when payments fail, the provider is left managing arrears and contacting customers across a large account base.
Horizon can support account verification during onboarding, consented affordability information for suitable post-pay services, and recurring payments aligned with the customer's circumstances.
Businesses get faster visibility of whether a payment cleared, while customers can complete prepay top-ups directly from their bank account.
Because funds are confirmed at initiation, there's less risk of a customer believing a top-up went through when it didn't.
Greater visibility and simpler reconciliation
Adding another payment method shouldn't create more manual work.
Horizon brings reporting and reconciliation into the same enterprise suite as the payment flows themselves.
Payments can carry the information needed to identify the customer, invoice, booking, policy or account, cutting reliance on manually entered references and reducing the number of payments that land in a suspense account.
Finance and operational teams gain better visibility across:
Payment status
Payment method
Customer and merchant information
Successful transactions
Failed transactions
Recurring payment activity
Reconciliation records
Instead of piecing together information from multiple platforms, teams can work from one consistent view of payment activity.
Faster speed to market with less complexity
Qippay Horizon is more than a payment API.
It brings together the infrastructure, products, merchant tools, APIs, bank connectivity and specialist support required to launch and manage an enterprise payment proposition.
Your organisation receives:
